Biography
Syd has many years experience advising Alberta businesses and national institutions in the areas of contracts, commercial transactions, corporate matters and secured loans. He has appeared at all levels of Alberta Courts and before various administrative tribunals. He has authored a number of papers including a paper on legal opinions in commercial transactions published by the Law Society of Alberta. He has appeared on panels of the Canadian Bar Association and the Alberta Law Society dealing with commercial transactions, public inquiries and professional responsibility. Syd lectured in the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta on professional responsibility and is a co-author of the Code of Professional Responsibility of the Law Society of Alberta.
Syd currently holds an "AV" rating in the prestigious Martindale-Hubbell legal directory. He received his Queen's Counsel designation in 1982. Syd was the first recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for exceptional contribution and achievement presented by the Edmonton Bar Association and received a Certificate of Merit from the Law Society of Alberta for service and dedication to the profession. He is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association and the Edmonton Bar Association.
When not at the office, Syd is an active sportsman. He has participated in hockey, baseball, basketball and football and is a retired Canadian Football League referee. He continues to be active in tennis, softball and golf.
In addition, Syd is an avid traveller. He has visited England, Israel, Russia, Nepal, India, Mexico, numerous countries in Europe, Asia, East Africa, South America, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean as well as throughout Canada and the U.S.A.
