Phyllis holds a B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science and Economics from Trinity College, University of Toronto (1968), a LL.B (with distinction) from the University of Alberta (1974) and a LL.m from Harvard University (College of Law) (1976). She articled with Emery Jamieson and was admitted to the bar in 1975.  

She practised with the City of Edmonton in the City Solicitor's Department from 1976 to 1980.  In 1980 she rejoined Emery Jamieson LLP and has practised continuously since that time with the firm.
